Did you know that the first-ever recorded meteorite landing in Scotland happened at an unassuming nature reserve on the edge of North Glasgow?
Situated on the banks of the Forth and Clyde Canal, the Possil Marsh Nature Reserve is between the areas of High Possil and Lambhill.
The meteorite, which fell to Earth on April 5, 1804, was commemorated with a monument in 2005, after a range of activities and events culminated in a celebration of the bicentenary of Scotland’s first meteorite.

What happened to the meteorite that landed in North Glasgow in 1804?

While a unique landmark stands on the site today, the meteorite itself is long gone, with the extraterrestrial object being gifted to the University of Glasgow’s Hunterian Museum in 1810.
Discussing the erection of the monument in 2005, Dr John Faithfull, curator at the museum, said: “This meteorite, which fell in April 1804, was the first ever recovered in Scotland, and one of the very first scientifically verified falls anywhere.
“This important scientific event at last has a fitting memorial.”
Today, the Possil Marsh Nature Reserve in Glasgow is a popular spot for both walkers and cyclists, with many praising its “off the beaten track” status on Tripadvisor.
